During this 1-hour session, we will identify the top pharmacy careers outside of traditional community pharmacy and hospital staffing that student pharmacists and others in Georgia are interested in pursuing. Pharmacists practicing in these settings will discuss minimal job requirements, job responsibilities, and a typical day in their life.

About your speakers
Nicholas Barker, PharmD, BCCP, BCCCP
Nicholas Barker is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist II who primarily practices in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 2010 from the University of Georgia majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Nicholas then completed his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2015 from Mercer University College of Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia, where he is now an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor. He completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency and PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at Grady Health System in Atlanta, Georgia. Nicholas joined Emory Healthcare in 2018 where he precepts students, PGY-1, and PGY-2 residents. Practice areas of interest include circulatory shock, vasoplegia, and coagulopathies.
Ashlyn Carter, PharmD
Ashlyn Carter received her PharmD in 2012 from Mercer University College of Pharmacy and was a community pharmacy manager at Target (later CVS) for many years. One of her proudest accomplishments is being voted Mercer’s IPPE Preceptor of the Year in 2016 by her former students. In 2017, Ashlyn began working at Emory University Hospital Midtown as an Infusion Pharmacist with the Winship Cancer Center, focusing on chemotherapy and sterile compounding. Ashlyn has been an active member of GPhA since pharmacy school and enjoys the region meetings, networking, and annual convention. She lives in Peachtree Corners with her daughter and husband, Bryce, who is also a pharmacist, and enjoys reading and traveling in her free time.
Tracy Dabbs, PharmD
Tracy Dabbs is with the Georgia Department of Public Health, Division of Health Protection,
Section of Emergency Preparedness and Response. Tracy is a pharmacist and an active member of GPhA.
Johnathan Hamrick, PharmD
Clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice and director of introductory pharmacy practice experiences at Mercer University College of Pharmacy as well as faculty advisor for the NCPA and Kappa Psi chapters; he teaches the communications, IPPE, management, and law courses.
He is a trained instructor for APhA’s Pharmacy-Based Immunization Certificate and NACDS’s Point of Care Testing Certificate programs. Johnathan has been an active member of GPhA since 2006. In 2014, he received the Pharmacist’s Mutual Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award. He is also a past-president of GPhA’s Region 5 for which he was named the Mal T. Anderson Region President of the Year in 2017.
Ruth Haile-Meskale, PharmD, MBA
Ruth Haile-Meskale is a Medical Science Liaison Lead at Spark Therapeutics. She joined five years ago to launch the first FDA-approved gene therapy for a genetic disease, then founded the hemophilia MSL team. With almost ten years of experience in Medical Affairs in both startup biotech and large pharma, Ruth is excited about Medical Affairs increasingly becoming a driver of the business of medicine. She also co-founded the Spark Medical Affairs Fellowship program and enjoys serving as the MSL preceptor where she coaches and mentors fellows.
Kalu Kalu, PharmD
Lead Pharmacist at Emory Winship Cancer Institute Clifton Infusion Center, Emory University Hospital
Kalu Kalu is a native of Stone Mountain, GA. He completed his pre-pharmacy coursework at the University of Georgia and is a 2017 graduate from Mercer University College of Pharmacy. He is an active member of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Inc. and was actively engaged in the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) as a student. Kalu completed a PGY-1 Specialty Pharmacy Residency at Emory University Midtown Hospital which cultivated his love for Oncology. In November 2019, he became the Lead Pharmacy of the Emory Winship Cancer Institute Clifton Infusion Center. In this role, Kalu oversees pharmacy operations, leads process improvement initiatives, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to provide exceptional patient care.
