Laura’s Story

Grandmother with diabetes inspires career choice; GPhF grants scholarship

“The Georgia Pharmacy Foundation’s scholarship is motivation to work hard and give back to the career I’m passionate about. It shows that I have support,” said Laura Nguyen, a Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine student in the Georgia School of Pharmacy.

Before she knew that she wanted to be a pharmacist, Laura took care of her grandmother who had several illnesses. One was diabetes. Overwhelmed with the long list of medications for Type 1 and 2 diabetes, Laura’s pharmacist guided her, exposing her to the various treatments and how they worked.

Laura desires to practice in an outpatient setting to build relationships and provide patient care for people like her grandmother.

She plans to graduate in 2022 and serves as president-elect for the American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) and as a PCOM representative on the new Georgia Pharmacy Association Student Leadership Board.

Laura received a scholarship through the Georgia Pharmacy Foundation, “I’m grateful that GPhF exists to help pharmacy students reach their goals during pharmacy school.”

Today, pharmacy students graduate on average with $166,528 in student debt. To make a difference in the lives of student pharmacists, donate to the Georgia Pharmacy Foundation today at GPhA.org/foundation.
